The Metropolitan Administration building, declared a National Monument in 1976, has a fascinating history that combines romance, the press and politics. In the 17th century, the French captain Juan Francisco Briand de Morandais fell in love with the daughter of Don Mateo de Caxijal and built a house on the street that today bears his last name. Over time, this colonial residence is replaced by a neoclassical mansion. In 1908, the building was acquired by leaders of the Conservative Party, who decided to build a new building designed by the architect Manuel Cifuentes Gómez in 1913.
